It Just Became More Exxy For You To Have A Pet, Australia

Just when you thought you were getting on top of your bills, think again.

It’s now become more expensive to have a pet, with some of the biggest and most popular pet food brands jacking up their prices.

Whiskas and Pedigree are two of the brands given a price increase, an inflation that we, the people will have to absorb.

The reason behind it, according to Barry O’Sullivan, general manager of Mars Petcare Australia, is soaring energy costs.

The company has raised its prices in a bid to offset those price rises, and the changes affect it’s entire range, including brands such as Pal, Advance, Eukanuba, Chum, Dine, MyDog, Royal Canin, Optimum and you guessed it - Schmackos.

Mr O’Sullivan said energy costs for the Australian arm, which employs 750 people at three factories in Wodonga, Bathurst and Wacol, had increased by 10 per cent in the past year.

He said lower water and energy usage would partly offset the increase, but about three per cent would be passed on to consumers.

“Ultimately Australian consumers will need to pay a high price for our brands and our products,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “We only ever do that as an option of last resort.

But when you are facing those sorts of cost pressures, you are left with no choice.”
