Channel Ten Have Spoken Out About Neighbours Future

Channel Ten has jumped to assure Neighbours fans that the show is safe, despite its contract talks in the UK stalling.

Negotiations between the Brits Channel 5 and its producers FremantleMedia Australia have so far failed to renew the iconic soap and are reported to be in deadlock.

Angry fans of the show in the UK have launched a petition to try and save the show from being axed.

Australian fans are also concerned. Channel 5 paid $500 million in 2007 to screen the show for ten years but America’s Viacom, the owners of Channel 5, are refusing to pay more.

Losing any part of the $50 million a year deal could spell the end of the show completely.

However, Channel Ten has refuted claims the show could be axed, saying “Every Australian drama needs substantial overseas interest to be financially viable, either through pre-sale or distribution,” Rick Maier, Ten’s head of drama, says.

“But Neighbours continues to outperform Home and Away twice a day in the UK, so we have good reasons to be optimistic they (contract negotiations) will be resolved.”

Neighbours airs weekdays on Eleven at 6:30 PM.
