X Factor, Idol, The Voice... most of us are drawn in to the talent show addiction in one way or another, and for those who might not find as much entertainment or inspiration from tuning in compared to the rest of us, or are simply trying to resist the temptation to be a part of what all the talk is about... we've yet to find a patch that'll keep you 100% quarantined, except for perhaps a couple of patches over your eyes, and some ear plugs.
And it's about to start all over again as American Idol hits our screens tonight. The big-name judging panel includes Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, our very own Keith Urban, and Ryan Seacrest has signed on for another two years as host of the show.
So, should we care?
Not necessarily, but unless you live under a rock you'll no doubt be exposed somehow to the hit TV show sooner or later, like it or not. But that might not be such a bad thing.
We've all heard of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jordin Sparks and have probably sung along to some of their tracks, but what about Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Taylor Hicks, David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Scotty McCreery and Phillip Phillips? Who are they you ask? They've all been through the same process as the first three, have an extremely high level of singing ability and last but not least - have won American Idol just the same.
Perhaps they wanted to sing but didn't want the fame, their musical style may already be similar to other successful artists, they just haven't reached outside of the American market yet or their music style doesn't reflect the frequently popular virus-like catchiness that you just can't get out of your head. Whatever the reason, by no means is their musical ability inferior so let's take some time to appreciate some of the lesser known gems of American Idol.
Phillip Phillips - Home
David Cook - Fade Into Me
Kris Allen - The Vision Of Love
Lee DeWyze- Beautiful Like You
Ruben Studdard - Flying Without Wings
Scotty McCreery - The Trouble With Girls
